What we do
TicketCalc is a free tool that estimates the real cost of a US traffic ticket — not just the fine on the citation, but the DMV points added to your record and the insurance premium increases you'll likely pay over the next three years. We cover all 50 states plus Washington D.C. for 9 violation types including speeding, DUI, reckless driving, red lights, and more.
Why we built it
Most drivers focus on the fine printed on their ticket. What they don't see is that the fine is often the smallest part of the total cost. For a $200 speeding ticket in a state that sits in our highest insurance-impact tier, the model puts a further $1,200 on the next three years of premiums — six times the fine itself.
We built TicketCalc to surface that hidden cost instantly, so drivers can weigh their own options — paying, a defensive-driving course, or contesting — before the deadline on the citation closes them.
How the estimates work
Fine ranges come from published state fine schedules, court fee guides and DMV documents — every state carries a citation and the date we retrieved it. The insurance figure is a different kind of number: no state publishes it, so it is a declared model. We place each state in one of four dollar-impact tiers, adjust for the violation type, and label the result as modelled wherever it appears. All figures are estimates — actual amounts vary by court, by judge, and by insurer.

Our data
State fine and points data is reviewed and updated regularly. The tool currently covers 9 violation types across all 50 states and DC. Fine schedules, court surcharges, and points systems change — if you spot an error or outdated figure for your state, please let us know.
