What makes Tennessee different
That split is the most useful thing to understand about a Tennessee citation, because points and convictions are read by different people. The points belong to the Department of Safety and bear on whether a licence is suspended. The conviction is what an insurer orders at renewal, and stripping the points does nothing to it.
The point schedule itself is one of the widest in this dataset, running from a nominal figure at the smallest margin to a very large one at the top. A Tennessee speeding ticket is therefore not one thing — the difference between the bottom of the schedule and the top is the difference between a formality and most of a suspension.
