What makes Texas different
That changes what a citation here actually is. With no running total and no ladder toward a suspension from one speeding conviction, the whole consequence is that the conviction exists: it reaches the driving record, and from there it reaches an insurer at the next renewal. The question in front of a Texas driver is closer to binary than it is elsewhere — either a conviction is entered or it is not.
The second thing worth knowing is that the state does not set the amount. The Transportation Code fixes a ceiling for most traffic offences and leaves the figure beneath it to whichever court hears the case, so the numbers on this page are assembled from what courts charge rather than quoted from a schedule Texas publishes.
