What makes Maine different
That combination — a genuine zero band and a very steep top — makes the margin on the citation the single most consequential number on it. A Maine driver with a low-margin ticket has a purely financial problem; a Maine driver with a high-margin one is two thirds of the way to an intervention after a single conviction.
Further up again the charge changes character entirely. A large enough margin is criminal speeding, a Class E crime rather than a traffic infraction, which brings a criminal record on conviction. The callout above gives the statutory line, and the fine schedule on this page does not price what sits beyond it.
