The Maryland hands-free and distracted driving statute
Under Md. Transp. § 21-1124.2, drivers on public roads may not hold, support, or manually operate electronic communication devices while operating a motor vehicle on active roadways. Hands-free law; moving violation points added on second offense.
Law enforcement officers throughout Maryland are authorized to issue citations whenever visual observation confirms prohibited device interaction. Permissible mobile use is generally restricted to manufacturer-installed integrated dashboard interfaces, single-tap voice activation, or true hands-free speakerphone arrangements mounted securely to the vehicle console.
